Smart home technology explained

Discover how modern technology can protect your home, reduce bills, and prevent problems before they start. Eco-Tech brings you future-ready solutions for a smarter, more efficient home.

What is smart home technology?

Smart home technology is simply modern technology that protects your home, reduces your bills, and prevents problems before they happen. It’s not gimmicks; it’s practical, money-saving tools that make your home safer, more efficient, and easier to manage.

For Eco-Tech customers, smart home technology includes things like leak sensors, automatic shut-off valves, remote boiler diagnostics, smart thermostats, freeze-risk sensors, smart TRVs, thermal imaging, and smart-home plumbing dashboards. These tools work quietly in the background, watching over your home 24/7.

Why Yorkshire homes need smart tech

Yorkshire homes face very real problems: old pipework, cold winters, high heating bills, ageing boilers, hidden leaks, damp and mould, radiators that don’t heat properly, and burst pipes during cold snaps.

Smart home technology directly solves these issues. It prevents expensive leaks and water damage, and stops breakdowns before they happen, giving you peace of mind and saving you money.

Affordable care for your home

At Eco-Tech, we believe in easy, affordable packages caring for your plumbing and heating needs, incorporating modern technology. Our solutions are designed to be accessible and provide comprehensive protection for your property.

We use real smart technology, not gimmicks. Our tech is preventative, not reactive, combining smart solutions with traditional expertise. We include smart tech in our packages, whereas others often charge extra. Remote Stop Tap

Water leaks are one of the most expensive household insurance claims, averaging over £9,000 per incident. Being able to shut off the water instantly can prevent major damage.

A Surestop remote stop tap is a hydraulic stopcock with a connected remote switch that can be installed up to 4–6 metres away from the valve, depending on the model. Pressing the switch instantly opens or closes the mains water supply.

How It Works

  • The main Surestop valve is fitted on the incoming mains supply.

  • A small hydraulic tube links the valve to a remote switch.

  • Pressing the switch changes the water pressure inside the tube, which opens or closes the valve — no batteries or electrics required.

Tesla T-Smart Hot Water Cylinder Thermostat – Upgrade Your Cylinder to a Genuine Smart Appliance

The Tesla T‑Smart Hot Water Cylinder Thermostat transforms a standard hot water cylinder into a fully intelligent, app‑controlled smart appliance. It replaces a traditional immersion thermostat with a digital, learning thermostat that adapts to your household’s hot‑water usage, improves efficiency, and gives you complete remote control.

The T‑Smart thermostat uses built‑in sensors, smart algorithms, and Wi‑Fi connectivity to manage your hot water more efficiently:

  • Learns your routine over a 7–14 day period and heats water only when needed.

  • Remote control via mobile app — boost hot water, change temperature, or switch modes from anywhere.

  • Unlimited time and temperature scheduling using the built‑in 7‑day programmer.

  • Energy‑saving modes (Smart, Eco, Timer, Travel) to reduce unnecessary heating.

  • Anti‑Legionella protection — automatically pasteurises the cylinder every 14–15 days.

  • Freeze protection — prevents stored water from dropping below safe temperatures.

Smart Alarms

What home safety should feel like.

All of the alerts you need. None of the noise you don't.

More than just a smoke alarm.

Phare C1 does more than just detect fire, smoke, and CO. We've built it with features that do more for you:

  • Motion-activated path lighting
  • Advanced air quality monitoring
  • Intruder detection radar
  • 4G connectivity for always-on coverage, especially in rentals and second homes
  • Explainable alerts, so you always know what's really going on

Smart Radiator valves (srv)

Smart Radiator Valves (SRVs) are digital, app‑controlled upgrades to traditional thermostatic radiator valves. They let you control each radiator individually, automate heating schedules, and reduce wasted energy — making them one of the simplest ways to improve home heating efficiency.

SRVs use built‑in temperature sensors and small motorised actuators to regulate the flow of hot water through each radiator. They connect wirelessly to your smart heating system or smartphone, allowing remote control, room‑by‑room scheduling, and integration with voice assistants.

Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats are intelligent, Wi‑Fi‑connected heating controls that replace traditional wall thermostats and give homeowners far greater control, automation, and efficiency. They don’t just follow a timer — they learn how a home behaves, sense occupancy, react to weather, and optimise boiler use to reduce wasted energy.

What Smart Thermostats Actually Do

Smart thermostats use sensors, algorithms, and connectivity to manage heating more efficiently:

  • App control from anywhere — adjust heating remotely via smartphone or voice assistant.

  • Learning your routine — advanced models analyse occupancy and habits to automate heating.

  • Weather‑aware adjustments — adapt heating based on outside temperature.

  • Room‑level intelligence — newer systems use distributed sensors for more accurate comfort control.

  • Geofencing — heating turns down when you leave home and warms up when you return.

  • Energy reports — show usage patterns and identify savings opportunities.

Why They Save Money

Smart thermostats don’t save money just by being installed — they save when they improve control compared to your current setup.

  • 8–18% gas savings for learning models.

  • £75–£150 per year typical savings when upgrading old controls.

  • Reduce wasted heating by reacting to real occupancy rather than fixed timers.

They’re especially effective for homes with irregular schedules, or where heating is often left on accidentally.

Smart Water & isolation valves

Stop a leak
the moment it starts.

Most water damage starts as a leak no one sees. Cubic Secure watches your water around the clock and shuts the main off automatically — usually before a single drop reaches the floor.

Small enough to fit any service hatch. Smart enough to act on its own.
